Saint Francis, a sow and more …

I am reminded of D. H. Lawrence's poem "Pomegranate," with its final lines:


For my part, I prefer my heart to be broken.
It is so lovely, dawn-kaleidoscopic within the crack.

  1. I wonder about the figure of speech — broken heart. I shall have to track down the origins. In literal terms, people die of broken hearts. In figurative terms, I suppose some also die. How odd.
